Eliza Khachatryan was born in the circus: Her father, [[Gevorg Khachatryan|Gevorg]], who was awarded the title of National Artist of Russia, is a graduate of the [[State College for Circus and Variety Arts]] (better known as the Moscow Circus School) who went on to work in perch pole balancing and high wire troupes, before creating his own high wire act; her mother, also a circus artist, presented trained pigeons.

Eliza made her debut in the ring at age three, as a contortionist dressed as a doll. She was trained in circus arts by her father, and later worked with him in a duet on the high wire. Besides her circus training, Eliza studied at the Russian Academy of Education, and had a keen interest in children’s psychology. But the circus ultimately took a prominent place in her life, as it generally does with those who are born in the fold, and Eliza chose to leave the Academy.
