In the 1970s, the Mechkarovi, who came from Bulgaria, were one of the top Russian Barre acts of the time—although they were not officially recognized at the 2nd International Circus Festival of Monte Carlo, in which they participated in 1976; they won special prizes, but were not awarded a Gold or a Silver Clown, the official Jury's supreme recognition. The Mechkarovi were better technically than most similar acts then, but perhaps not as good or elegant artistically. Nonetheless, they were, at the time, the Russian Barre act against which all the others were measured.
